Brother Tom was distraught at the loss of his "life long" companion.

Arrangements are for a 'wake' on Friday evening and Funeral on Saturday morning, in Kentwood, La, where they had moved (about 100 miles away) about 2 years ago, to live with their Son.

A new Worshipful Master in a small Georgia town spent the first four days making personal visits to each of the members, inviting them to come to his first Lodge meeting. The following Thursday the Lodge was all but empty.

Accordingly, the Worshipful Master placed a notice in the local newspapers stating that, because the Lodge was dead, it was everyone's duty to give it a decent Masonic burial. The funeral would be held the following Monday afternoon, the notice said.

Morbidly curious, a large crowd turned out for the "funeral." In front of the Altar, they saw a closed coffin, smothered in flowers. After the Chaplain delivered the eulogy, he opened the coffin and invited his Brethren to come forward and pay their final respects to their dead Lodge. Filled with curiosity as to what would represent the corpse of a "dead Lodge," all the Brethren eagerly lined up to look into the coffin. Each "mourner" peeped into the coffin then quickly turned away with a guilty, sheepish look.

In the coffin, tilted at the correct angle, was a large mirror.

Remember the obligation we all took my Brethren and attend and support your Lodge!!!

Given at Park Place Lodge # 1179, AF&AM, Houston, TX on Monday, July 12, 2004

In a couple of weeks or so, I will mark yet another birthday, this time its number 45. Every time a birthday shows up, I start using words like young and middle-aged and half-way mark. There are times Im afraid to blink, fearful that another ten or twenty years will pass. Thankfully, the good Lord has given me an effective remedy for this middle-age malady in our beloved Masonic Fraternity. For here I have found brothers of substance, character, and faith who bide their time serving their God by serving their fellow man. Wonderfully, when we are building our goodwill in the hearts of men, the age issue seems to disappear.
Ive been a Mason now for 11 ½ years; long enough to see some significant changes in the fraternity and an urgent call to action in areas such as membership numbers, retention, and community outreach. I am inspired by Masonrys positive responses to these issues, especially the renewed commitment to our youth and our families. In examining my own conscience as to how best to help the cause, I turned to my profession of Music with singing and music education. While serving as a soloist and songleader at the First United Methodist Church of New Orleans, I found the men in the choir to be honest, sincere, hard-working, faithful, and had positive attitudes......hey, that sounds like the Masons! After casually mentioning that there may be another outlet for honorable men such as themselves, questions about Freemasonry became frequent with 5 choir members petitioning for membership and a member of the congregation from Everman, TX renewing his membership and becoming active again after a 30-year absence. These additions to Arthur M. Retif Lodge in New Orleans proved to be timely and fertile; the lodge was down to 31 members and we were seriously considering a merger with another lodge. To make a long story longer, our little lodge soon became the Arthur M. Retif Singers. We toured several times a month, and we became a regular staple at Grand Lodge. Membership began to surge and fallen away members returned.

During the development stage of the lodge choir, we discovered that music had once served as an important part of the lodge rituals with opening and closing odes, the National Anthem, hymns, and musical toasts for visiting guests. However, when we went to buy music for the choir, we found that there was not a lot of music available for the brethren, and the music that was available was ancient (Old Black Joe, Massas in de Cold, Cold Ground, and several classical pieces that didnt fit the, uh, Cajun social mystique). Borrowing a page (pardon the pun) from the Order of the Eastern Star, we started singing the National Anthem and closing each meeting with Abide With Me. With a little help from a brother in the opera business (of all things), we were singing songs like Sixteen Tons, God Bless America, God Bless the U.S.A. and others. Music has been a welcome addition to Retif Lodge and has helped to renew the fraternity in that part of New Orleans.
Music has been said to soothe the savage soul; I can certainly attest to this miracle because I know what my students were like at the beginning of the school year and I know how they sounded at the end of the school year......music and prayerwork wonders. One of the hardest jobs I ever had was teaching elementary school music in Luling, LA. Believe me, early elementary and kindergarten music classes were designed for 21 year old, slender, energetic music teachers fresh out of college with boundless energy and unshakeable optimism. The principal asked me to teach a Music and Math class to kindergarteners, helping them to improve their counting skills. My counterpart, Masonic Brother Justin Paradise (yes, that really is his name) taught Literacy and Drama. His prized student was a youngster who had just turned five and barely made it into the kindergarten program by a few days. He could not grasp the concept of the letter o.Bro. Paradise worked with him, I worked with him, and he eventually discovered o in one of the songs he learned. His father, however, had reached the breaking point drawing the letter over and over, finally saying o, son, its a damned o. Of course, the next day during literacy class, Bro. Paradise goes through the letters: l, m, n, ......l, m, n, ...... l, m, n, ......what comes next? The young student responded Mr. Paradise, thats a damned o!
Well, the young student discovered the letter o through songs like Old McDonald and The Farmer in the Dell, standard classics that introduced nearly all of us to rhyming words, vowels, and other literacy concepts. In our Lodges and other community organizations, music can re-introduce us to the values of community singing, belief, patriotism, and reverence for the Almighty and all things good, holy, and wholesome. Perhaps in thecoming weeks, we could seize a golden opportunity to sing old music, new music, and music you can whistle on the way home.
I will close with the story of a young fellow in Savannah, GA in 1972 having a disastrous adolescence in Junior High School and a turbulent time in a new, racially integrated classroom and society. School fights and riots were common, drugs and assaults were everyday occurrences, and school success generally meant getting through the day without having your head knocked about. The two music teachers had the wisdom and faith to see beyond the turmoil at the school and bring students together to make music instead of war. Their mantra seemed to be when these kids are tootin, they aint shootin. It came to be that the precious times of peace were during the music classes. Songs like African Noel, One Tin Soldier, Fiesta Tango, Theme from Hogans Heroes, Apples and Bannanas, Blame It On the Bossa Nova, Tropical Twighlight, and A Trumpeters Lullabywere just the remedy for the social maladies of the day. One obnoxious French horn player was even asked to play in the musicians union with his band director. A loving Father rebuilt, refinished, and sold three Farmall tractors, just so that student could have a professional model horn for his new-found professional interest. The story ends well; the student goes off to college and becomes a music teacher; the band director goes on to form a traveling band that played in several movies; the father picked up the violin at the tender age of 67 and now enjoys the reward of a life well-spent, an eternity with his Heavenly Father. The band director we call Russ Sena and the Russ Martin Ensemble, the Son and Father became Freemasons with a strange last name: Kujawa. I think its Polish for Smith.
Thank you, Worshipful Master, for the privilege of addressing the lodge; thank you my brethren, thank you one and all.
